According to the band's engineer and builder Wang  Xiaojing reforms must be made to make Chinese folk music more enjoyable  and to help it enter the international market. As a result, the 12-Girl  Band, which incorporates China's traditional musical characteristics  with western skills, was formed with Wang's impulse and vision.
The  idea of forming a musical group like the 12-Girl Band had long been  brewing in Wang's mind, although it wasn't until June 2001 that the band  was officially established. The recruitment phase was full of bustle  and excitement. A great number of campus students and graduates from  three major professional musical academies -- the Central Conservatory  of Music, China Conservatory of Music and Central University for  Nationalities -- participated in the competition. But the 12 young women  emerged triumphant.
All  of the members of 12-Girl Band grew up in musical families and began  practicing traditional Chinese music at the ages of six or seven. Having  graduated from the top arts universities in Beijing, all of them have  won musical awards in various instrumental competitions. The women not  only excel in traditional music instruments like thegu zheng, pi pa,  er huandyang qin, but can also master some less familiar  instruments like thedu xian qin, tu liangandju chi qin.  Wang also noted that besides musical skills and accomplishments, another  important requirement for recruitment was style and charisma. The  12-Girl Band not only provides audiences with modern Chinese folk music,  but also emanates visual appeal.
The  band's stage presence diverges greatly from that of traditional Chinese  musicians, as well. Traditionally, performers played various  instruments while seated; the women, however, stand tall and use their  body language to emit a strong atmosphere of youthful vigor.

The adapted folk music incorporates the percussion and  electronic music from the West, which makes the traditional Chinese  vibes more rhythmic and enthusiastic. 12 Girls Band was founded in June,2001.She is such a popular artistic              party as combines China's traditional musical instruments  with modalities              of modern popular musical performances. With dainty musical  rhythms              and passionate performances, she manages to enlarge the  group of people              who enjoy Chinese folk instrumental music, and thus develops  Chinese              folk music both home and abroad.                
The members of 12 Girls Band have come from such  famous artistic                colleges and universities as Central Conservatory of  Music, China                Conservatory, Central University for Nationalities and PLA  Art College.                Their musical instruments mainly include those Chinese  musical instruments                like guzheng, dulcimer, pipa, erhu, zhudi, xiao, hulusi,  duxianqin                etc.Beijing Shi Ji Xing Die Cultural Communication Limited Company is the broker for 12 Girls Band.Mr. Wang Xiaojing, the general manager of the company, is the founder of the band.Since early in 1997, Mr. Wang Xiaojing has begun to think about such a question as how to package up Chinese folk music so that it could win a larger audience and enter the international market of the mainstream music.After many years of serious thinking and discussing with his good friends in the artistic community, he came up with an entirely new performing modality for folk music.   On June the 10th, 2001, a great many  graduates                and current students from various artistic colleges and  universities                in China thronged into the spot where 12 Girls Band was  inviting                applications for this job.After much picking and  filtering, 12 beautiful                girls got enrolled.On June 18th, the founding of 12 Girls  Band was                declared.On October 5th, the first special concert by 12  Girls Band---Charm---was                held in the 21st Century Theater in Beijing.From then on,  those                newly created performing modalities of folk music by 12  Girls Band                have begun to undertake all kinds of tests from the  market.About                this concert people held different opinions. Some thought  highly                of it while others preached it down. Some were optimistic  about                12 Girls Band and its new performing modalities for folk  music while                others were doubting whether Chinese folk music would  become popular.                But just at that time 12 Girls Band showed itself on  various stages                of China, diligently presenting people with its music and  performances.                Meanwhile, Mr. Wang Xiaojing, in accord with his goal  formed in                the beginning, also actively got in contact with craft  brothers                abroad and did his best to introduce 12 Girls Band to the  international                market.As her musical contents and performing modalities  became                more and more mature, 12 Girls Band successfully held the  second                special concert---Miracle--in Beijing Exhibition Hall  Theater on                January 1st, 2003.The perfect combination of Chinese folk  instrumental                music with the performing modalities of modern pop music  won the                approval of both experts and amateurs at home and  abroad.12 Girls                Band, with her affecting music and inspiring performances,  and her                creative combinations of the folk musical instruments, has  knocked                at the gate to the international market.
